Obstacle is the way by Ryan Holiday - book review

"It's a little unnatural, I know, to feel gratitude for things we never wanted to happen in the first place. But we know, at this point, the opportunities and benefits that lie within adversities. We know that in overcoming them, we emerge stronger, sharper, empowered."

What a great book by Ryan Holiday. I read this in January 2020 and absolutely loved it. I felt like I needed to read this book. Here the author talks about three disciplines that we need to practice and develop inorder to overcome any obstacles in life.

1. The discipline of perception: How to control our perceptions at times of adversity to turn obstacles into opportunities. When you are faced with a problem, before you let fear take control, take a moment and remind yourself that you have the power to control your mind so that you can control the way you react to the problem. Remember life is 10% what happens and 90 % how we react to it.

2. The discipline of action: While it may seem that one needs to have courage to overcome a difficult situation but courage is simply taking action. Decide, take action and do well ( called decision points). Follow the process (called teachable moments) and not the prize. Thinking about the outcome can be overwhelming. So break down the obstacle into pieces and do what you do now and move on to the next.

3. The discipline of will: Will is an internal power which is never affected by the outside world. Irrespective of what the obstacle is and what the outcome will be, it is the will power that keeps you going even if it means starting things all over again. The author says to develop this discipline you need to build your inner strength. He used the term " mental athletes" for people with will power. Love it 😀💪💪. With time, endurance and perseverance develop the discipline of will, the core inner strength which is indestructible.

I feel so blessed to have read this book and I highly recommend everyone to read it. You will only benefit from it.
